Carbon Offsetting

And how it relates to net zero

What is carbon offsetting and why is it important?

In June 2019, the UK became the first major economy to pass legislation to end its contribution to climate change by 2050.

The Government plans to meet this net zero target while still being committed to economic growth, which means achieving ‘clean growth’ is vital.

While the UK is committed to clean growth, it’s inevitable that we’ll create a carbon footprint on some level, whether from heating our homes and offices, or producing the energy needed for manufacturing and production.

So, to achieve net zero, whilst we’re still producing carbon, we need to balance out our carbon footprint. This is achieved through a process known as carbon offsetting.

Carbon offsetting sees any emissions created, balanced by initiatives that remove an equivalent amount of greenhouse gases from the atmosphere.

Examples of such schemes can include planting trees or using technology like carbon capture and storage.

Flogas have offset our own Scope 1 and Scope 2 CO2e emissions as part of our 2040 vision to build a low carbon future.

How can I offset my carbon footprint?

Carbon offsetting is one way individuals and businesses can make a difference; offsetting their own emissions, while at the same time benefiting communities in other parts of the world.

At Flogas, we encourage our customers to reduce their carbon footprint where possible. Some ways to achieve this include reducing your transport emissions, controlling your building’s temperature, and switching away from higher carbon fossil fuels such as oil and solid fuels towards cleaner alternatives such as LPG.

For those carbon emissions that cannot be prevented, carbon offsetting offers a solution.

We’re offering carbon offsetting to our business and domestic customers. This works by purchasing equivalent ‘carbon credits’ based on energy consumption. These credits will then be put towards activities that reduce greenhouse gas emissions or absorb carbon dioxide.
